Before you travel

Plan your time in the Altai

A few practical decisions make room for the journey: where to arrive, what to expect and what to bring.

Before booking your transport

Check these three things with us first, especially for migration and festival trips.

  1. Your dates

Confirm the proposed dates and availability. An enquiry does not hold a place.

  2. Your connections

Agree your arrival, meeting point and return to Ölgii, with room for changes before onward travel.

  3. Your written plan

Review the itinerary, total quote, inclusions and booking terms before committing.

Getting to Ölgii

All our journeys start and end in Ölgii, in western Mongolia. Your travel to and from Ölgii is booked and paid for separately from the tour.

If you are arriving through Ulaanbaatar, discuss domestic flight or bus options with us before booking. Schedules, availability and fares can change; we will help you check connections for your dates and agree where to meet.

Leave room between your countryside journey and onward travel. Confirm your arrival time, pickup point, luggage arrangements and departure plans with us before buying tickets.

Agree your arrival handoff

  • Share your planned arrival date, local arrival time and flight or bus service with us privately.
  • Agree the exact meeting point, who you will meet and how to contact each other if travel changes.
  • Discuss luggage space and your return connection before finalizing the pickup plan.

Reconfirm after a transport change. Keep your passport, ticket booking code and other private travel documents out of public reviews and comments.

Check with the official source

Check current services, baggage allowances, check-in instructions and ticket change rules with your booked carrier. A domestic ticket can have different conditions from your international flight.

These links are planning resources; they do not confirm a route, seat, fare or permission to enter.

Choose your journey

Start with the experience you want. Each tour page has its current price, inclusions and day-by-day plan; send us your dates, group size and interests to discuss the fit.

Seasons & timing

Summer in the mountains

Uujim–Yamaat is our summer journey. Weather and access shape the outings, so a route or activity can change. Pack for changing mountain conditions and ask us about your intended dates.

A migration follows the family

Spring and autumn migrations are a working family's seasonal moves. Their timing depends on the hosts, grazing conditions and weather. The published itinerary is an example; a fixed migration date, route, number of moving days or complete migration cannot be guaranteed. We discuss the planned experience and alternatives before booking.

For Spring Migration, ask about the family's planned March 2027 moving window. Later dates need specific confirmation. Snow, wind and freezing conditions can continue into spring; agree clothing, bedding and the flexible travel plan before departure.

Festival dates need confirming

Festival departures are arranged around the organizers' confirmed program. Ask us to confirm the dates before booking transport. The itinerary can shift if the festival schedule changes. Family visits do not guarantee eagle handling or a hunt.

Stays & meals

Shared stays, agreed in advance

On Uujim–Yamaat, nights 1 and 5 are in a family guest ger in Uujim; nights 2, 3 and 4 are at Yamaat. Accommodation is shared. Spring Migration begins and ends with nights in our Uujim guest ger; the intervening shared family stays depend on the agreed route. Autumn Migration and festival trips include countryside stays and time in Ölgii, as described on their tour pages.

Before booking, discuss sleeping arrangements, bedding, heating, toilets, washing, electricity and phone access. Tell us any comfort or accessibility needs so we can explain what is available on your route.

On migration trips, bathing is available only at the family guesthouse in Uujim. There are no bathing facilities while staying with the migrating family. Spring Migration includes Uujim stays before and after the countryside portion; autumn bathing visits are arranged around the family's timing.

Make a meal plan before setting off

On Uujim–Yamaat, guests buy groceries for their own group's meals according to their dietary preferences, and our family cooks them. Groceries are excluded from the tour price; cooking is included. Discuss the food budget and shopping arrangements before departure. Spring Migration includes all tour meals, groceries and cooking. Autumn Migration and festival tours include meals during the tour. Tell us about allergies and dietary requirements before booking so we can agree the arrangements.

When staying with a family, follow your guide's advice and ask before photographing people or joining household tasks. Participation depends on your hosts' invitation and daily responsibilities.

What to bring

Use this as a starting point, then confirm the details for your route and season.

Your packing & preparation checklist

Tick an item once packed or confirmed with us. This is a starting point; your dates and agreed route shape the final list.

Guests buy groceries for their own group and diet; groceries are excluded, and our family’s cooking is included. Nights 1 and 5 are in the family guest ger in Uujim; confirm bedding and arrangements for Yamaat before packing.

Why prepare for changing conditions?

Mongolia’s weather can change quickly and rural phone coverage has gaps. Save essential details offline and discuss the current conditions with us.
